The Sussex Audiology Centre's team not only has an Audiological Scientist and experienced Audiological Technicians who are also registered hearing aid dispensers, but it has the considerable value of having a Consultant Ear Nose and Throat (ENT) Surgeon as a part of the team.
This team approach means that the Sussex Audiology Centre is able to offer its clients a comprehensive service, when necessary, allowing the opportunity for a uniquely complimentary Consultant opinion leading to an accurate, prompt diagnosis if there is a medical problem.
This can prove very useful if clients have come to the Centre through self-referral or when they have been referred directly by their General Practioner (GP) and are found to have not only a hearing problem requiring hearing aid provision, but also an ear problem requiring a medical opinion.
Ear wax can sometimes be a major obstacle to good hearing aid provision but can often be removed by your GP through the administration of drops and ear irrigation (syringing). However, if syringing is difficult or contraindicated, or if there is uncertainty about the condition of the ear drum behind the wax, then the team's Consultant ENT Surgeon can remove the wax through microsuction.
Hearing loss is often due to the natural aging process but it can also be caused by exposure to loud noise, illness in birth or childhood, hereditary problems, the toxic effects of some medicines, diseases, injury or trauma, and fluid, infection or middle ear problems. In some cases it can be a combination of these.
The team's ENT Surgeon is Mr Tranter, FRCS Consultant Otolaryngologist. He is involved with general adult and paediatric ENT surgery but has a special interest in ears.
ENT surgeons are trained in the surgical and medical treatment of a range of conditions. These include the diagnosis and medical, surgical and rehabilitation management of diseases, disorders and injuries of the ear, nose and throat including head and neck cancer and specialty facio-plastic surgery.
For those patients who have special hearing problems or conditions, Mr. Tranter is able to offer state of the art surgical procedures, including bone anchored hearing aids (BAHA) and the Retro X.
